Congratulations! You have created a logo with the help of AI. Now what?
AI has found many uses. One of which is to create a quick logo or similar graphic. But is AI really helpful in the logo creation process? Let’s take a look.
How to Use AI to Generate A Logo
When you get started creating a logo, the first response from an AI generator looks something like this.
What I need from you
- Business or brand name – The exact name that should appear in the logo
- Industry – What your business does and who it serves
- Style preference – Examples: modern, minimalist, bold, elegant, playful, vintage, tech, luxury
- Color preferences – Any colors you want included or avoid
- Text or icon – Should the logo be text-only, icon-only, or a combination of both
- Usage – Where will it appear: website, social media, packaging, signage, business cards, etc.
Interestingly enough, these are similar questions we would ask if we were helping you create a logo for your brand.
Once you have the answers for these questions, AI will be able to generate something for you. Sometimes, seemingly by chance it does ok, sometimes, it fails miserably.
How Creatives Generate Logos
Once again, we will start with similar questions as stated above to get a feel for who the final logo or brand should connect with. Often each creative has a process he likes to follow that works for him. Even on our team we vary within our techniques. Some of us like to sketch with physical pen and paper, some like to sketch on an iPad or directly on a computer. An experienced logo designer is looking for the way the words fit together and even how the letterforms fit within the words. Fonts play an important role in this but also the font also heavily impacts the connection with the intended audience. Scripts are harder to read but carry more personality and connection while a strong serif or sans communicates professionalism. In our experience, the sketching process is where most great ideas are “stumbled upon.” With some ideas sketched, the designer will transfer them into a vector format through Adobe Illustrator or similar program.
The Difference?
Efficiency
Obviously, with a few keystrokes and the click of a button, AI can get you a finished-looking logo. Humans can’t compete with that. (AI is pulling from the most creative work from professionals without compensating them.) So AI “wins” here.
Creatively
One of the most glaring shortcomings of AI is the lack of meaningful symbolism incorporated into something like a logo. As we stated, every logo element has meaning from the style font and the emotion it evokes, to the style and content of an icon or incorporated graphic. This is not only in what is represented but also, how it is represented. Logo Requirements
To be prepared for any requirement, your logo should be readily available in a variety of formats. Typically .pdf, .eps, .jpg, and .png are the most common file formats and rarely .ai, .svg, .tiff would be requested. Here again, AI will nearly always only give you a raster file format and your logo will not be able to be scaled without being poor quality (see graphic below).
Another item worth noting is we have had AI use a strong, high-quality font in the logo wordmark but reference another free font that does not convey the same quality.
